Veteran's Day

By Darden Smith (1986)
On album Native Soil (2006)

Native Soil
Its Veteran's Day I hear the drums a beatin'
And I ain't gonna make the parade cuz its the great world war
Nobody gives a goddam
About the one's who wore the blue and grey

Look here it just turned 19 and 25
And I'm sure these boys did their mother's proud
But I was loyal ... to my native soil
And I'm a war relic now

So who wore blue and who wore grey
It gets kinda vague as the memories fade
But we fought like cats, fought like dogs and they filled our boys full of lead

And there's rows and rows of crosses for those
Who died at Bullrun and Shenandoah and I still hear the canon
See the bullet whizzin'
My lungs are filled with powder smoke

You know when men stop talking with bayonets and bullets, their words will be worth their weight in lead
And look at all these widows who wouldn't sit crying
The men I ["taught"?] who fought it out between themselves

So who wore blue and who wore grey, gets kinda a vague as the memory fades
But we fought like cats, fought like dogs, and they filled our britches full of lead

That son bitch Sherman he burned my farm
His soldiers stole my woman away
One of 'em took her body like a child takes candy...
She's a broke woman now

But when she killed that yankee with a pitchfork there
She buried him she even said a prayer
Then she spit on his grave
Cursed Abe Lincoln
She kept his gold watch for a souvenir

So who wore blue and who wore grey, gets kinda a vague as the memories fades
But we fought like cats, fought like dogs, and they filled our asses full of lead

But there's church bells chiming through the heart of Dixie
Has Jefferson Davis risen from the dead?
Oh no, its just Veteran's Day
You know I hate it when I lose my head

See its Veteran's Day
I hear the drums a beatin'
And I ain't gonna make the parade cuz its the great world war
Nobody gives a goddam, about the one's who wore the blue and grey

So who wore blue and who wore grey, gets kinda a vague as the memories fade
But we fought like cats, fought like dogs, and they filled our britches full of lead

Just bury me deep in a field of cotton
Look away
Say bury me deep, I've been forgotten
Won't yah please look away

I say bury me deep in a field of cotton
