One question that popped up yesterday was pretty interesting:
Comments
they live in wyoming or wisconsin
they live in minnesota
in one episode (note: i have not done this) but it shows all the states they have been banned from, which is all of them except 4 or 5 so that should make it pretty easy to figure out
I thought it was New Hampshire b/c of the geyser rock ep and I see one other person on here has all kinds of other reasons it is NH...so I think it is NH!
THEY LIVE LESS THAN 100MILES FROM A HICK TOWN THEY CALL SPRINKLES JIMMMIES
I just saw i rerun of the simpsons. the episode is called behind the laughter and at the end of the episode it clearly states that they live in northern kentucky. i did some research and there is a springfeild in northern kentucky.
IT'S MISSOURI...
1st- There is a Shelbyville that borders Springfield there.
2nd- On the episode where Homer becomes Chief of Police, and the episode where the town gets 2 area codes, the area code is 636, a Missouri area code... Ta Da.
Can I just ask.. is this issue really that important? I mean, I was kind of curious as to which state they live in so I took 5 minutes to look it up on the net when I stumbled upon such rigorous, self righteous, and often plain offensive debate on this site. I mean, really.. why do you people care so much? Have any of you considered the fact that maybe, just maybe, there is no answer. Perhaps it's just a running joke and you should just accept that that's all it is. Believing you know some kind of hidden truth about a cartoon show (of all things!) that somehow in your tiny mind elevates your cultural or social standing in view of the peers you so desperately long to impress demonstrates only your deep-seated superiority complex amid the context of the life you wish you had. Let it go. It's just a cartoon. Go outside. Create... Inspire... Breathe... Live life. Stop wasting everybody's time debating subjects that are of no relevance to anyone or anything. Please. Knowing what state the Simpsons live in certainly won't get you laid.
OHIO!!! if you watched the show u would all know this
is my husband hector having sex with other girls other than me.
yeah, with me 8)
I am sure they live in Kentucky. Not only did they say it in "Behind the Laughter", but their is a Simpsonville, Kentucky, and that is only a few miles from Shelbyville, Kentucky.
im just a simpson fan. been watchin since i was lil.
in the starting where the universe is in the atoms of homers head.
they zoom out from springfield and look at the u.s. and if you match it to a map it definitely looks like kentucky.
not saying thats my conclusions just somtin to add.
I think Anonymous is the creator of the Simpson's AKA Matt.
What about NEW JERSEY? In the "Mother Simpson" episode, where Homer discovers his mom is still alive, Homer thinks Walt Whitman's tomb stone is his mother's. In reality, Walt Whitman is buried at Harleigh Cemetary in Camden, New Jersey. Also, in the "Stark Raving Dad" episode, Leon (the man who acts like Michael Jackson) says, "I'm a bricklayer from Paterson, New Jersey." In the "Two Bad Neighbors" episode, the Simpsons live near George Bush Sr... who has resided in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, Maine and New Jersey. In the "The Wizard Of Evergreen Terrace" episode, Homer and Bart drive to the Edison's Menlo Park Laboratory in New Jersey. In "The Mansion Family", Springfield Nuclear Power Plant's cooling towers are visible from international waters, twelve miles off the coast of America. Plus, Springfield Nuclear Power Plant is on Interstate 95, which runs along the east coast of the USA from Florida all the way through Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire to Maine. There are several episodes which hint to the Simpsons living near water on the east coast... similar to the characteristics of New Jersey (as well as surrounding states). There is a ship deporting immigrants, a beach, lighthouse and a bridge similar to the Memorial Bridge located in Springfield, Massachusettes. However, I don't think they live in Massachusetts because Homer yells at Sideshow Bob, "Go back to Massachusetts, pinko!" in the "Sideshow Bob's Last Gleaming" episode. Of course, there is also the similar-looking Vachel Lindsay Memorial Bridge found in Springfield, Illinois. Thus, continuing the confusion!
rene you are a dumb oiece of shit who obviously does not know the simpsons. there is an I-95 near portland OREGON and matt g was born in oregon.
Not only is it mentioned in an episode that they live in Kentucky and the fact that there is a Simpsonville in Kentucky, it is also msentioned in the song "Canyonero" that "it's the Kentucky fried truck endorsed by a clown."
Although I personally think it's every Springfield in the USA the closest place I'd say would be Springfield, IL. I've lived in springfield for 18 years, I'm probably a little biased in my decision but there are a lot of things the point towards it. There is a shelbyville nearby, we have a powerplant, and there was a Nuclear Power Plant that was shut down awhile back due to poor management. We have a dam right near the power plant. We have a Lake Springfield, there is an Evergreen Terrace in Springfield. As far as "They don't live in Springfield, because they say they're going to visit the Capital City and the city is the Capital", well the suburbs are where they are, and I live in the suburbs. I always say lets go to the city when I'm out there, and so do the majority of people I know. There is also a bar named Joe's near where I live (I don't know if that's a play on Moe's). We live near The Great Lakes. Our Sheriff has always been a moron, we had a corrupt Governor George Ryan (and a new one Rod Blagoia-nobody-gives-a-fuck). People have said it's Connecticut because of I-95, well I-95 runs through Sprinfield, IL too, actually it runs a half mile near where I live. Also something my cousin brought up at a family reunion I don't know if it really means something or not, but Jebediah Sprinfield was the person who was supposed to found Springfield, and Abraham Lincoln was a big factor in the history of our town. Both of their last names are used for well know towns, I dunno I thought it was interesting. We have a Zoo in Springfield, anyways I'm still a little groggy I just woke up, I hope this helps.
They don't live in Connecticut because the episode with Scorpio. Scorpio said to look him up if he was ever on the east coast. Implying that they don't live on the east coast
The Simppns must live in Missouri because in tjhe ewpisode Tale of Two Cites, Olde Springfields area code is 636, Which is Missouri's area code
The Simpsons must live in Missouri because in tjhe episode Tale of Two Cites, Olde Springfields area code is 636, Which is Missouri's area code
Hey Kevin, do you know how to spell the word "the" because I believe it's T-H-E
I just want them to live in Oregon....I don't even hardly watch the Simpons but....i have been reading this for a long while and think they should live here (in Oregon)....=D the end....and the news is about to talk about it right now...so maybe we will see...
Oregon Has dank dank dank dank weed too. Good enough too make people look yellow and shit.

The winner will be determined by your votes on USATODAY.com in early July. Voting ends July 9, and the winning city will be announced on or around July 10.
TELL YOUR FRIENDS TO JOIN IN!!
Why Should We Win?:
-Springfield Mass has the Memorial Bridge, it has the river that exactly matches the overhead shot of the Simpson's Springfield.
-Spfld,MA has an Armory, Springfield Country Club,an East Springfield and West Springfield, a Christian Science Center,
-The writer that wrote the episode where Bart shoplifted the videogame based that episode on his own experience shoplifting from Child World in Springfield MA,
-"Last Exit to Springfield" where they draw Mr. Burns like the Grinch- Springfield, Ma home of Dr. Suess
-Mayor Quimby definitely sounds like he's from Boston, Massachusetts, sounds like a Kennedy family member
-And we just as dysfunctional too
-the said Springfield,ma in an old episode
-they mention boston and connecticut alot
Springfield, MA, "The city of Homes" is the "Home of Homer!!!!"
PLEASE VOTE AND IF WE WIN WE WILL HAVE "THE SIMPSONS MOVIE" premiere at the Hippodrome and put Springfield,MA on the map!! Let them know that its not Springfield,IL...not Springfield,KY...MO...or TN...or VA......let em kno!
other reasons.....
Westover AFB - sideshow bob hijacks a bomb and holds the base and town hostage
Bill And Marty morning show - Bax and O Brian
Football episode - Hank hill shows up in the episode saying we drove 1500 miles to see this? hank hill is from texas and it is about 1500 miles from texas to massachusetts
there was an episode where there was a red sox banner on the wall of the comic book store, so its gotta be the MA one
EVER NOTICE THAT MAYOR QUIMBY KINDA HAS A BOSTON ACCENT???
"SPRINGFIELD CIVIC CENTER"
"TASTE OF SPRINGFIELD"
C'MON, ITS DEFINITELY MASSACHUSETTS! ONLY WE SAY THAT!
Springfield Massachusetts! The 19th most dangerous city to live in two years in a row! (Ok, one year it was 18th). The cops are also about as dumb as the three in fake Springfield. It has pollution, the schools are so bad that I think the state came in to run them, burning tires lots, and the old mayor of the town was stealing from the city just like the Simpsons Springfield! I think we are to win then!
Most of the people in "Springfield" have New England accents- Mayor Quimby, Moe, Lenny and Carl, Barney, Chief Wiggum, the other two cops, etc
Springfield, MA, was the first Springfield - the original - founded in the 1700s. Another little known fact, Mike Skully, the writer for the show, was born and raised in West Springfield, MA - just over the bridge from the soon-to-be Homertropolis.
Springfield,MA has the Memorial Bridge, the Armory, the Springfield Country Club, the Kennedy's, Cheers (where Homer drove to one night) Dr Suess, and the river that matches the overhead shot of the show exactly
springfield MA because when the simpsons go to japan homer doesnt want to eat at the table shaped like the state where he lives. complaining about taxes possibly.
when on "The Tonight Show" Dan Castellaneta made a reference to some unnamed MA politician when voicing Mayor Quimby.
-In one episode it talks about the Springfield Armory, also in Springfield, MA
-There is a Springfield University where the Simpsons live, maybe a reference to Springfield College
-The Simpsons' Springfield was settled in 1796, before the Westward expansion, eliminating any possibility of it being west of the Mississippi River/Appalachian Mts.
-There are snow covered mountains in Springfield, MA- MT. Tom
-In one episode, Bart gets a credit card, gives Krusty a check in hopes of him signing it, gets the check back with a stamp on it, brings it to the bank(and so on) it shows the current time in many locations, including Washington & the Cayman Islands, all of which are 2:00ish, so they are on the East Coast!
***ONE OF THE SHOW'S PRODUCERS, MIKE SCULLY, IS FROM WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA yet another connection
It has been said that the set takes place in Oregon, in the town of Springfield. Matt Greoning grew up in Portland, Oregon, and its actually quite similar to the cartoon. Mayor Quimby, Ned Flanders, Milhouse Van Horton, and Reverend Lovejoy all have last names named after streets in Portland, and Evergreen Terrace is also a Portland street. Matt also went to a school quite similar to Springfield Elementary. NT is supposed to mean North Kentucky, since in "Behind the Laughs" they say that the Simpsons are a Northern Kentucky family, but the set is in Oregon. *they dont say that its in Oregon, thats just what its like*.
my vote is for Springfield, Missouri, because there is a very "Mr. Burns" like character there named John Q. Hammons. He is filth rich and owns the majority of the town. He even has a statue of himself near the city center! I can't wait for the movie...maybe it will provide more clues?
Has anyone ever seen the prieview for the simpsons movie in it on some pre views it says the 4 states that boarded springfield when i heard it i couldnt write all of them down fast enough so i am guessing if u see the preview and get the states you will find out were springfield is
has any one seen the previews for the simpsons mopvie in it it states the 4 states that surround springfield when i heard it i couldnt copy all of them down in time but my theory is either sum one brings sumthing to record or write them down with or we wait for the movie
The live in Illinos there is a homer lane a lisa lane and shelbyville there its by werter and it snows
The four states are Ohia Kentuckey and maine and ohio
i think its in illinios because politicians passed a bill or whatever that made springfield, illinios the official hoome of the simpsons.....check if you dont believe me.
http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/fulltext.asp?GAI%20D=3&SessionID=3&GA=95&DocTypeID=HR&DocNum=490&Le%20gID=7319&SpecSess=&Session=
there you go...i hope i added to the confusion
Well it has to be by the water because they have a hurricane in an episode
how dissapointing.....the creators of the simpsons and the simpsons movie have made springfield, vermont the official home of the simpsons.......whats in vermont?...sucks for the people in illinios who passed the house resolution
You all are retarded. Its obvious that the towns are a compilation of different towns throughtout the North East. You just have to listen to te accents, veiw the styles. For crying out loud, Marge has an effin Jersey accent!!!!. Yeah, it really does not matter, but its obvious to me that the intention is for them to live somewhere on the East Coast. But I really doubt if it is supposed to be a specific city.
In halloween IX part 3, maggie sends a signal from the mexican gulf so it must be at the coast at the gulf or as they say in "Beyond the laughter" the commentator Says "this kentucky family..."
^^^^ hah why would you believe what the commentators in "Beyond the laughter" say? anyways, no one here will ever find out where the simpsons live becuase it is just a fictional Springfield town, just look at the trailer for the new Simpsons Movie. Flanders explains to Bart their town is boarded by Nevada, Ohio, Kentucky, and Maine. Lets have someone here figure that one out.
In that one episode where lisa finds the truth behind jebediah springfield, their founder. She finds out he tried to kill George Washington. George Washinton died before the states grew from the 13 colonies. Maine, Mass. New Hampshire, Rhose Island, New York, Penn., Virginia, Deleware, Maryland, N and S Carolia, and Georgia are the only states who used to be apart of the 13 colonies.
Dude maine was not a original colonie u forgot new jersey
It's oregon. reason is, in one episode Lisa is collecting cans on the beach that are worth 5 cnts a piece. that narrows it down to less then 10 states. Then in that same episode the school had taken a field trip to Albany (very close to Springfield Oregon). Also the Simpsons have been kickd out of many states so that narrows it down even more. Lastly, it has to be west of the Mississippi because the radio station (kbbl) starts with a "K". Radio stations starting with K are west of the Mississippi, stations starting with "w" are east. I do believe there are a lot of contradicting facts on the show so if anyone has any thoughts, leave a message on my myspace www.myspace.com/natekaufman
Oh, and I guess Vermont won the springfield contest, I'm almost possitive thats not right.
i am going to venture a guess here...
i think they live in virgina.
Okay well geographically it must be near an ocean near a desert near lush forests with lakes they must have a snowy winter and hot summers also it must have a airport that does intercontenetal flights.......does that narrow it down?
They live in the western part of the country - KBBL. I love how everybody voting for the east coast seemed to have overlooked that little factoid
well i think the simpsons live in a town called Seatle were Matt Growing grew up witch is in W.A i think this beacuse they have a rocky beatch a quorky mayor a monorail and the space nidel but to tell you the troth i don't think even the creators know were the Simpsons live.
matt groening grew up in portland
Vermont did win...and they will also host the premier.....

Whatever is i think we can easily figure out that they probably made up the city...
in one episode an announcer identifies them as a northern kentucky family...
I know that the simpsons do not live on the coast. In the episode where Apu is threatened to be deported, Lisa asks him to identify his state. Bart's head pops up in the screen, blocking the exact location of their state. The east coast was visible, and Lisa was not pointing to a coast. She was pointing somewhere in the mid-west.
Correct me if im wrong but on the episode where homer takes bart to behavior camp in oregon he tells moe he cant manke it because he has to take bart to a camp in oregon. Which means he doesnt live in oregon.
anyone see the episode where homer goes to college. If my memory serves me right - the college had a sign that said U of M
wow that helps alot, Do you no how many U of M's there are, minnesota, michigan, maine, massaschusets, etc. that doesnt help
I was playing my baseball game and i noticed one of the minor league teams name was the Alberqueque isotopes. So i think there from New Mexico.
Its impossible. They tell you the border states in the Movie.
I did it out and it did not add up.
they live in paris
joe's right
Watch the movie and you'll find out... Flanders tells Bart what boarders Springfield... Or thats what I got out of it...
Yeah ... but Flanders claims that Ohio, Nevada, Maine & Kentucky.
Even I know that all of those states are scattered across the four corners of the US, and I live in Australia (that's saying something).
ITS A CARTOON THEY LIVE IN AN IMAGANARY WORLD !!!!!!!! ON one EPISODE THEY GO OUT SIDE OF SPRINGFEALD IN TO A DESERT THE NEXT IN TO WOODLAND AND THE NEXT TO A SKI RESORT !! DUR MATT HAS TOOKEN POINS FROM EVERY STATE IN THE USA AND CONBIND THEM TO CREATE THE TIPICALL AMERICAN STATE
WHICH HAS THE FEATURES OF EVERY STATE IN THE USA IN WHICh THE TYPICALL AMERICAN FAMILY LIVE ( PS I CANT SPEALE THAT GOOD !!!)
Its in Kentucky. According to a Simpsons special Troy Mc Clure says they are from there.
I think there are in Illinois cause Springfield, Ill, is the only city to have a hockey team. Springfield, Ill has a hockey team in the American Hockey League
im pretty sure its new jersey because there are many episodes where they mention going to atlantic city which is located in nj also flanders moves slightly over to pennsilvania in one episode
actually u cant really tell cuz sometimes they give clues to this state then clues to a different state, plus i think matt groening just likes to torture us.
matt groening is from oregon. there are streets in portland oregon called flanders and other shit like that. i go to the university of oregon, and our neighboring town is springfield. it is a hick type of town. eugene, where campus is, is supposed to represent shelblyville. on our campus there is a statue of a pioneer, which i believe was the inspiration for jeb smith the pioneer. the areas are always green and oregon is the most green state in the country. seriously, its oregon. this is where groening grew up.
it is in oregon. that is where matt groening is from. i go to the university of oregon, which is in eugene and neighbors springfield. this town resembles the simpsons springfield quite nicely. shellbyville is supposed to represent eugene. on campus there is our famous pioneer man statue, which is what jebediah smith is made to resemble. on one episode they are on a river and it is said that "now entering the most beautiful place in the world", or something to that effect and there is a sign that says eugene, oregon. its oregon man, groening grew up there. also there are lots of snow capped mountains, the area is very green, and there are deserts. moes i believe is supposed to be a local bar called maxs in town.
The Simpsons cant live in most Western States like Cal. and Ore. because in an episode when Skinner was driving to orlando, a sign said it was 2,653 miles away
with this mileage Springfield almost has to be in a western state like Oregon or Washington. Take 2653 miles straight line from Orlando and its exactly in Puget Sound/Seattle, but given about 10% for road miles it could be somewhere in Washington or even Oregon although probably not CA.
OK THIS IS IT>>>>THE SIMPSONS LIVE IN FLORIDA!!! IN EPISODE 'Marge's Son Poisoning' WHERE SHE BUYS A TANDEM BIKE, WHEN SHE GOES TO SELL IT AGAIN SHE IS ON A BUS WITH THE BIKE THAT HAS MIAMI ON IT.
IF THE SIMPSONS LIVED ANY FURTHER AWAY OR IN ANOTHER STATE I DOUBT SHE WOULD TAKE A BUS TO MIAMI. IT MAKES SENSE TO ME! SORRY BOUT THE CAPS
well i live in yelm, wa everyone over here is convinced its based on our town, we have powerplants identical to those in springfeild not to mention matt groening is from yelm....
way i see it, they dont want anyone to know! the clues change all the time, conflict with each other, and of course people will argue because everyone WANTS them to be from their state!
maybe we're just supposed to WATCH the show and ENJOY it without worrying about the location of a FICTIONAL television show.
i love the simpsons as much as the next chick who grew up with them, but truth is, ITS NOT REALITY.
hasnt anyone noticed the tree house of horror episodes?
bart has died like twice right?
maggie became a green alien
bart also got replaced by his "not evil" twin
oh, and not to mention they meet every single celeb thats famous at the time.
its not meant to be critisized on this leval!
in the episode were he goes into the real 3d world and is at the cake shop. if you found that place you could prove were they live
i think that the simpsons are the best thing ever and any kill joys hoo come along a say that people hoo talk about the simpsons are nerds are fags wif nuthin better to do but cut their wrists, wank and make fun of other people
peace out yalll
Sorry guys, but your all stupid, they obviously live in Michigan. Springfield has what people say "ocenas" in that state, well I say they're surrounded by great lakes. U.P has the mountains which are shown in episodes. There was a desert in the episode once, hence the numerous sand dunes in michigan. Michigan allows the death penalty, so does Springfield, It is obvious it is close to Canada due to the fact that they went to canada to smuggle drugs (I just saw that episode). And lets also bring into reference that Springfield was the fattest city, much like detroit, was one of the worste cities with crime, much like to detroit, and it also has a neighboring city that it hates, (grand rapids, or flint take your pick). And lets not forget the numerous mentiosn it has to michigan city, such as when they said "You just beat the old fattest city record" and MIlhouse said "Flint". Plus I can't remember the episode, but I do remember a computer there and I think it was talking about the worste city in america, or maybe something else, any way, Lansing was the first on that computer. ITS MICHIGAN AND I REFUSE TO BELIEVE OTHERWISE.
u are stupid because cheif wiggum said let michigan handle it why would he be talking about his own state by the way i think its kentucky
THEY WERE ON VACATION IN THAT EPISODE!
You need a copywrite date are your website is going to be canceled.
There is no way to know where they live, since fox always changes and makes new clues that point to another state.
i dont think they live in any state but i think the directors are just screwing around with us so we would never know
Illinois because there is a shellbyville next to it.
Illinois because there is a shellbyville next to it.
You ass clowns. Think about all these statements for a minute. Michigan? Illinois? Either you've never watch the show or you have a poor understanding of geography. The Simpsons is a fictional town. It's surrounded by mountains, oceans, deserts, and volcanoes. Also, in the movie, Ned states Springfields neighbor states are Ohio, Maine, Nevada, and Kentucky (look at a map).
Im an ass clown.
Springfield's a fictional town.
season 12 ep 13 Homer gets a medicinal marijuana card for OREGON its oregon
the anonymous and mark in the begginning of this whole thing are fuckin retarded and should die and burn in hell haha,im saying its illinois casue its seems the most logical thing, so screw u guys if u dont agree
the anonymous guy and mark in the begginning of this whole thing are fuckin retarded and should die and burn in hell haha,im saying its illinois casue its seems the most logical thing, so screw u guys if u dont agree
I think it's conspicuous that in the Simpson's Movie, they list the four states that theirs borders, and they include Ohio and Kentucky, two of the states that most people are betting on. As for Maine or Nevada, there are probably a great deal of clues to support those two as likely states as well. I think what they're trying to say is, "To all you people who think you have it right, think again. There is no right answer."
When you try to find the state that borders all four, there of course isn't one. This supports the theory that the city is located in whichever state is convenient for the episode. A slight clue comes with the fact that in the movie, their back yard is at the edge of town, while in several episodes, there are other houses beyond the back fence. But in order for the story to make sense this time around, (no explanations, don't want to spoil it) they had to be at the edge of town.
As for Shelbyville, it is one of the most common city names, after Springfield of course. There are many of them within driving distance of a Springfield.
The names are common. I had a friend in college whose legal name was Homer Jay Simpson, yes Jay like in the episode. Of course there are street names in every state named Homer and Lisa and so on.
The point isn't that they are in -a- state, it's that they're every family in every state, with a picket fence and 2.5 kids and ridiculous problems like the rest of us. The humor is in how they respond to normal situations and blow them incredibly out of proportion.
Kind of like the "years" some people have put into trying to figure out what state they're from.
The Simpsons is a parody of real life and the people and places that make it up. When you're telling such a story you don't have to have all the facts straight, just whichever ones lend themselves to a funny story.
If the states that border are Kentucky and Ohio, it has to be Indiana!!!
P.S. Try to prove me wrong!
In the one of the newer episodes, called "Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind" the beginning pulls back from the simpson house to reveal that it is slightly southwest of the great lakes, making it Springfield, IL!!!!! FINALLY!
how did they get to international waters in the great lake?
I am from Springfield illinois and they did a contest to decide what springfield it was and ours was not selected... unless that was for a promo or something. If you look in our town we do have the smoke stacks just like the movie.. other things resemble our springfield also. I think out of all the springfields ours closest resembles it.

springfield is not meant to be in any specific state, it is a fictional place in a cartoon show, the point of it being called springfield is because there are so many, so the writers can give "clues" to fuck with people...like all of you..who are convinced springfield is located in a specific state. its a cartoon they change things to fit different senerios.
youll never find out what state the simpsons live in until there absoulutly sure its the last season or movie plus its a cartoon there not supposed to make sense
Who knows.
It isn't possible for the Simpsons to exsist in any state, it's just a joke to wind you up. There are so many contradictions, they are most likely to exist in North California or Washington State, but even then it is impossible.
Im from Ireland and I think all you Americans are pretty stupid, ITS A JOKE!
The Simpsons suck, Family Guy is a million times better, and in Family Guy you can actually tell where it's set, amazing isn't it!
